Why Qualify in Pole Fitness??

Below is an email conversation from one of my newest members to the Pole Passion instructor team
Karen was spotted over a year ago by one of the directors of Pole Passion for her enthusiasm and dedication to the pole world

Karen has now just successfully completed her Accredited Level 3 Instructor Training course

Karen recently wrote to me and said
‘When I did the first aid certificate last year there was alot of negativity from some of the girls about Pole Passions instructor training. They were saying how wrong it was that you could do your level 1 & then be qualified to go away & teach inverts. I did try to explain that you progress through the levels to work up to that on level 3 but they really didn’t seem to take it on board.

I think it may be an idea to emphasize a little more on the level 1 what the content is of the next 2 levels, maybe quote some comments from people who took the level 3. Maybe you could have a display poster like the one you have for the burlesque instructor training (can’t remember what they're called!)

Level 3 yesterday’s full day instructor training was really hard and challenging, i'm so not ready to teach at that level yet but I thoroughly enjoyed it. People really need to be pushed to go on to the level 3!

I must admit I really enjoyed devising the course and yes it’s designed to be hard !!

Level 1 gives you the basics, foundations and fundamentals of pole fitness and does not give you automatic right to teach inverts! there are no inverts in it!! therefore we are not endorsing the teaching of inverts in level 1 - so that information is incorrect they were quoted to say

We all have to start somewhere and many are negative because they don’t like to follow a system that has been approved (I was one of those people) so I fully understand where they are coming from

what level 1 does give you is a recognised qualification and accreditation that you have reached the required standard to teach pole fitness safely, effectively and progressively - telling the world you have worked hard for your accreditation !!

what we have worked hard for in Pole Passion is to devise a documented structure whereby insurance companies are beginning to recognise our skill and award our efforts with insuring us against accidental injuries at a level we are qualified to teach

I always look at it as - what would the judge say and ask if there was a fatal accident in one of our lessons! (God forbid)

I’ve worked long and hard for over 10 years to offer the best training the industry has to make excellent instructors

We can not make instructors join our courses (there is always a freedom of choice) however we have made opportunities for those who would like to join us and these are now available to all, which again if they choose not to progress with courses awarded and supported by accreditation's then that is up to them. - how would the judge see it?

There are many people in many industries that are not properly qualified and let’s not forget how young pole fitness still is. There is no law required to be accredited to teach pole fitness however as a professional company we offer these accreditation's to be the best and most professional which I believe we have gained, not only national but international recognition - there are many amazing and talented pole instructors out there as there are many unqualified doctors and driving instructors and electricians, however can they get adequate insurance when needed?

For me when I started pole dancing and pole fitness, there were no recognitions or qualifications and people didn’t take me or our industry seriously - now we have and yes we are gaining the recognition we all so deserve.

What’s great also is that all our courses are recognised by some insurance companies too whereby years ago no one would insure us or if they did it was £1000's !!

I was happy and thrilled to receive such wonderful comments today with a little back log of emails from the Christmas period
Tapping away for what now seems my life (yes I have children and a very supportive husband that perhaps I take for granted over the passion of my subject , hobby and job ) – the pole!

I just want to say a huge thank you to all my supporters, friends and colleagues and to step back from busy life and to be grateful that I have the opportunity to share my knowledge (Pole Passion).

I started this business just over 10 years ago for personal growth and development, mentally and physically, which still continues 10 years on but had no idea at the time I would be inspiring so many worldwide either (at the beginning the internet and mobile phones did not exist!!)

With this thought I will promise to share more of my ’Secrets’ in 2012 and continue to work hard for myself, family and friends near and far.

Is it safe to use a fake tan during pole dancing for fitness?

Do Pole Dancers Use tanning products and is it safe to do so?

- We do generally have a code of conduct for safety reasons here.

Do NOT to apply a face tan or body tan up to 24 hours before going on the pole and always shower after tan application.
This is for two reasons as some tanning products can cause a slight slippery (oil based) residue which may make a participant slip off the pole (not a good practice and very dangerous!) the second reason is they may deposit a slippery residue when using the equipment for other people using the equipment.
Our general rule is NOT to apply any cream, lotions or moisturisers prior to going on the equipment - showering before is highly recommended.

There are many pole gripping products now on the market, that are suitable for use, prior to pole which helps with pole technique, however non that are of a tanning/colouring nature for the skin!!

Jess took 36 girls through the grilling pace of her training routines from cross ankle release sit ups up the pole, to spin combinations on the free standing Rpoles and floor to ceiling poles in Brighton studio where Pantera Blacksmith (USA) pole tricks expert also hosted one of her very first Master class with Pole Passion years ago.
Jess worked hard supporting the girls of all standards and experiences and with her friendly manner and supportive approach making the day run smoothly, transitioning into the amazing Christmas Party also hosted by Pole Passion as a thank you to the pole girls near and far

Think F.I.T. - So why has Pole fitness become so popular as the new form of exercise in gyms world wide? It's easy, the techniques incorporate all the elements and components of fitness - identified by Kay Penney, founder of Pole Passion, in 2001 when she first embarked on pole exercise and begun to write her extensive instructor training programme . With her comprehensive fitness experience and knowledge she begun her quest to make it available to all, safely and effectively.

So how does Pole Fitness work?? To make physical improvements in your body, you need to work your body and muscles harder than usual. This is referred to as the overload principle. As your body becomes more conditioned, you need to increase the frequency, intensity, or time of your workouts in order to continue improving your pole fitness level.
Frequency: How often you exercise on the pole . For beginners, consider starting with 2-3, 45 minutes to 1 hr sessions per week.

Intensity: How hard you exercise. For example, the pace you walk or spin around the pole, the amount of weight you lift (you can always add leg weights or wrist weights to increase this increasing your heart rate too.

Time: How long you perform an activity. "Time" can also refer to the number of sets or repetitions you perform in your sequences and training and the length of your performance and routine Start off with 1 minute routines then progess in 30 seconds at a time until you reach competition and world class standard of 6 minutes.
Exercise Component 1: Aerobic Exercise in general

Aerobic exercise increases the health and function of your heart, lungs, and circulatory system. For maximum effectiveness, aerobic exercise needs to be rhythmic, continuous and involve the large muscle groups (primarily located in the lower part of your body.) Pole fitness incorporates this component such as walking, jogging, cycling, aerobic dance, and stair climbing, all being excellent examples of activities that use large muscle groups. Activities combining upper and lower body movements such as Pole fitness and cross-country skiing, rowing, and swimming can lead to even higher levels of aerobic capacity.

Exercise Component 2: Strength Training in general

Strength training is the process of exercising with progressively heavier resistance to build or retain muscle. Unless you perform regular strength exercise, you will lose up to one-half pound of muscle every year of life after age 25. Muscle is a very active tissue with high energy requirements, even when you are asleep, your muscles are responsible for over 25% of your calorie use. An increase in muscle tissue causes a corresponding increase in the number of calories your body will burn, even at rest. So by building the pole dancing muscles will help increase your metabolism.

Exercise Component 3: Flexibility in general

Flexibility is a critical element of an exercise program but it is often overlooked. Stretching is important for a number of reasons; increases physical performance, decreases risk of injury, increases blood supply and nutrients to the joints, increases neuromuscular coordination, reduces soreness, improves balance, decreases risk of low back pain, and reduces stress in muscles and gives you more variety on the pole and during floor work.

Strength Training basics

We’d like to fill in the gap by giving you the foundation of any safe and effective strength training routine. You’ll learn the names of the major muscle groups and the exercises that target them, the difference between sets and reps, the elements of proper form, and the basics of frequency and progression.

The Major Muscle Groups during Pole Exercise

When selecting exercises for your strength routine, it’s important to choose at least one exercise for each major muscle group. This prevents muscle imbalances that can lead to injury. Let’s take a look at the major muscle groups and a few of the exercises that target them:

• Gluteals – This group of muscles (often referred to as ‘glutes’) includes the gluteus maximus, which is the big muscle covering your bottom. Common exercises are the squat and the leg press machine. The glutes also come into play during lunges, tall box step ups, and plyometric jumps. POLE – Body swerve, high leg hook.

• Quadriceps – This group of muscles makes up the front of the thigh. Exercises include squats, lunges, leg extension machine, and leg press machine. POLE – pole glide, double and single leg descend, pole back, back hook spin

• Hamstrings – These muscles make up the back of the thigh. Exercises include squats, lunges, leg press machine, and leg curl machine POLE – double and single leg decend, donkey kick

• Hip abductors and adductors – These are the muscles of the inner and outer thigh. The abductors are on the outside and move the leg away from the body. The adductors are on the inside and pull the leg across the centerline of the body. These muscles can be worked with a variety of side-lying leg lifts, standing cable pulls, and multi-hip machines. POLE - Back hook spin knees apart

• Calf – The calf muscles are on the back or the lower leg. They include the gastrocnemius and the soleus. The gastrocnemius is what gives the calf its strong rounded shape. The soleus is a flat muscle running under the gastrocnemius. Standing calf raises give the gastrocnemius a good workout, while seated or bent knee calf raises place special emphasis on the soleus. These small muscles can handle a relatively large amount of weight. POLE – standing on tip toes, pogo pole jumps

• Low back – The erector spinae muscles extend the back and aid in good posture. Exercises include the back extension machine and prone back extension exercises. These muscles also come into play during the squat and dead lift. POLE - good posture, pole desend and assend

• Abdominals – These muscles include the rectus abdominus, a large flat muscle running the length of the abdomen, and the external obliques, which run down the sides and front of the abdomen. Exercises such as standard crunches and curls target the rectus abdominus. Reverse curls and crunches (where the hips are lifted instead of the head and shoulders) target the lower portion of this muscle. Crunches involving a rotation or twist work the external obliques. POLE – high leg kick, spinning scissors

• Pectoralis major – Large fan shaped muscle that covers the front of the upper chest. Exercises include push-ups, pull-ups, regular and incline bench press, and the pec deck machine. POLE floor work, floor to standing

• Rhomboids – Muscles in the middle of the upper back between the shoulder blades. They’re worked during chin-ups, dumbbell bent rows, and other moves that bring the shoulder blades together. POLE – centre body on pole

• Trapezius – Upper portion of the back, sometimes referred to as ‘traps.’ The upper trapezius is the muscle running from the back of the neck to the shoulder. Exercises include upright rows, and shoulder shrugs with resistance. POLE – pole climb

• Latisimus dorsi – Large muscles of the mid-back. When properly trained they give the back a nice V shape, making the waist appear smaller. Exercises include pull-ups, chin-ups, one arm bent rows, dips on parallel bars, and the lat pull-down machine. POLE – Pole climb

• Deltoids – The cap of the shoulder. This muscle has three parts, anterior deltoid (the front), medial deltoid (the middle), and posterior deltoid (the rear). Different movements target the different heads. The anterior deltoid is worked with push-ups, bench press, and front dumbbell raises. Standing lateral (side) dumbbell raises target the medial deltoid. Rear dumbbell raises (done while seated and bent at the waist, or lying face down on a flat bench) target the posterior deltoid. POLE - spins

• Biceps – The front of the upper arm. The best moves are biceps curls. They can be done with a barbell, dumbbells, or a machine. Other pulling movements like chin-ups and upright rows also involve the biceps. POLE – back bend pose, pole climb

• Triceps – The back of the upper arm. Exercises include pushing movements like push-ups, dips, triceps extensions, triceps kick-backs, and overhead (French) presses. The triceps also come into play during the bench press and military press. POLE – Caterpillar Flag Flatline Scorpio

Kay Penney owner of Pole Passion is delighted to see her once student, now advanced Pole fitness instructor, Paula Bines, of Pole Passion, who has become a Pole dance & fitness expert and Instructor who has been poling for fitness and confidence for over 3 years. Paula has worked hard from a beginner student and now upto advanced instructor status, winning the hearts and soles of the panel of judges on Friday 4th November. she has won a prestigious place in the finals demonstrating her unique strength and skill.

Paula will be delighted to be alongside singers and dancers, beat boxers and body popping, as they will all be show casing their talents.

Auditions for Crawleys Got Talent took place over many days. Organisers saw almost 180 acts, over 9 days in 8 neighbourhoods across the town. The judges, including Tilgate’s Elliott Growney; a final year music student at Chichester University, Arts Development Officer Jo Joseph and representatives from Crawley Lions, Crawley Young Persons Council and Vision in Youth Collective have now whittled the performers down to just 20 fabulous acts.

Paula found pole fitness an excellent way three years ago, to help overcome her lack of body confidence, having been bullied as a school child she has had major challenges to overcome her body confidence issues and to be able to perform at the Hawth will be an amazing achievement in Paula's life. She and Kay now begin hard training to help with her stage presence and to continue to develop Paula's confidence.

Kat 'PoleKitty' Humphrey climbed Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK with the new Portable Fitness Pole by RPole (r-polefitness.com) in her backpack!

Kat is an adrenaline junky and also a lecturer at Nottingham University!!

She is the first known person to pole dance on a mountain (certainly Ben Nevis)! She did it to raise money for three cancer charities
– Breast Cancer Care,

Jenyne, also known as Butterfly, has been a professional pole dancer for 10 years.
She first began pole dancing, which then led her to other circus aerial apparatus and it was
then she truly discovered her love for flying.
The focus of her life became performance art and she moved to Las Vegas. Jenyne acquired positions performing in the shows Le Reve (produced by Cirque du Soleil director Dragone) and for world famous DJ’s such as Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, and David Guetta.

She teaches and performs on trapeze, hoop, fabric, rope, hammock, straps, bungee, and she created the first female aerial pole act. Jenyne won the inaugural US Pole Dance Federation Champion in 2008 and then placed 2nd in the World in 2009 at World Pole Sport & fitness championships

She is actively involved in instructional workshops, performances, hosting
special events, and judging competitions.

Jenyne recently visited places such as Australia, Russia, Canada, England, Scotland, Italy, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Caribbean. Jenyne is an innovative mentor in pole safety and fitness programs, as well as federations supporting the growth of pole dance. She is honored to be recognized for her passionate and dedicated leadership in this amazing industry.

Loic had the incredible history making challenge of opening the 211 show representing the future of male pole dance and fitness world wide with his amazing costume which he designed himself and won best costume award. He was technically perfect and with his solid performance the crowd erupted with his emotive performance a phenomenal opening.
Alexandra, the eldest competitor of the championships performed a manly Chinese inspired performance using his strength to climb the pole with his pumps with his incredible leaps and drops which were breath taking.
Ferios from Mexico had a very dance inspired performance demonstrating incredible strength and flexibility.
Next up was Keem with his unique and challenging costume as a mermaid - the only performance seen with legs tied together!! his music malfunction, stopping his routine under the 3 minute rule, whilst the whole crowd gave him a standing ovation clapping to his silent rhythm encouraging him to continue. The judges gave him the opportunity to perform once more which he did to perfection the second time.
Evgeny Greshilov new to World Pole Dance merged his charisma, talent and other dance styles to his show, a combination of fun and acrobatics, dance and strength winning the hearts of the judges and crowd winning him first prize.
Davide from Italy performed a circus inspried theatre style performance as a joker.
Matty Shields from Australia also an unknown performed for his second time after his doubles performance His Aboriginal style performance and urban dance style created a unique, entertaining and fluid performance, a great start to the world of Kings on the pole.

An incredible opening show from the Japanese male and female doubles wearing white costumes, demonstrating incredible spinning routines from one hand, where Masayo was suspended in the air with the palm of Kasuya's hand.
Next up was Kate and Kate from the UK with their fun suspensions and jokey performance using innovative combinations and mime suspensions from the neck creating a powerful performance. Barbara and Ilka from Hungary danced to Tears of a Dragon, a risk of a song as former world champion Felix Cane also used that song in her championship performance, they partnered shoulder to shoulder with incredible balance, both with equal strength and being flyers throughout their routine with creative new shapes, beautiful creativity and a perfect performance winning them first prize.
Cecilia and Ana from Argentina wearing a silver costume both red and white, had dramatic and moody music demonstrating suspensions away from the pole. They started in 2010 for fun and with hard training created their routine together.
The fifth competitors Michelle and Matty a mixed double had a superb acro balance beginning with incredible strength from both competitors melting and merging as one they have only been performing for 6 months together.
Last up was the Russian couple Olga and Valentina which had an operatic feel and movement to their presentation winning the best costume award for their category.

Pole for yoU aNd I was set up in 2010 with our first competition held on February 19th 2011.

The vision of pole for yoU aNd I is a competition run for students by students.It's aim is to bring students together to celebrate the art of pole and making an arena where competition is a achievable reality like it is in all other university sports.

The founders and organisers of Pole for yoU aNd I are Amadea Hills, Anna Meekums and Vici Hemming (this is who you'll be talking to throughout the process of entering and competing in the event). They were all members of a university Pole Fitness Society when they entered their first external competition and considered entering an inter-university competition if possible. Upon looking in to entering such an event, they found that there was nothing of this kind available in the UK. The event was set up not long after with the first competition happening in February 2011.

Amadea, Anna and Vici are looking forward to making Pole for yoU aNd I even bigger and better than last year and are excited to meet everyone again in 2012.

It was my second time to the worlds, 2 out of 3 is pretty good! I didn't make it to the first as it was in Jamaica and that's a bit far.... In 2010 I was very kindly asked by Kay Penney, head judge, to be an accompanying judge at the preliminaries. I was very honoured to have been asked, I don’t perform and I don't compete (I did compete, once back in 2008 and almost exploded with fear and nerves. It’s not an experience I want to repeat, I just needed to know how it felt to be on the stage and be judged, so I would be able to speak from experience and inform my students, should they want to compete). I am not well known, not super flexible, I can't train daily and I am on the more 'advanced' side of 35, but I have been a student of pole since 2006 and been instructing since 2008, and I am also a HUGE fan of pole and of polers.

I am an official 'pole-slag' (loving everything about it and everyone who does it) and have trained with, under and alongside some of the world’s best. I am empowered by every single student, performer, competitor, instructor and judge that I meet in this industry. I am a human Pole-Sponge...And I was blown away by the standard of the competitors last year. It was a hard job to judge that 1 preliminary heat. I was watching each performance like a hawk, checking toes, technique, strength, trick standard, lines, grace, innovation, presence, form and entertainment. I spent every one either grinning like a Cheshire cat or gawping with my mouth agog, and most of the time, BOTH! I have attended judging courses and am passionate to represent each competitor to the best of my ability

The final in 2010 was simply outstanding, my team (who made it out to Zurich) and I loved every second! We had tears, we had laughs, we had some serious 'stalker' face photographs with our poling idols and we agreed to make a trip back the next year.

This year, Kay asked me to judge at the prelims and at all the heats of the final as Tricks Syntax Co-ordinator, a position usually held by the pole-guru Deb Riley - UK, so I was blown away and under immense pressure! I did LOADS of homework, checking doubles, male, Chinese and single pole routines on youtube and facebook. I sat for hours on end with a pen and scribbled every move, transition, trick and spin down, I noted if toes were pointed, if lines were clear, how long positions were held for - counting the seconds on an iron x, and a flatline sm. I created a code for moves that would be seen a lot in performances, LH for leg hang, TG for twisted grip, X for iron X, J for Jade, JD for Jade Drop. I invented codes for a move or trick or transition that was new to me, and another code for an extremely hard move. And I sat and tried to memorise moves from all over the world. It didn’t matter if I called a Scorpio a Gemini or even if I called a butterfly a Frank, as long as I always called it the same thing consistently throughout the competitions.

AND HOLY SMOKES was my right hand abused that night?!!! New tricks left right and centre, incredible doubles moves, mind bendingly hard holds and lifts..... One hold was held for an outstanding length of time, over 12 seconds I seem to remember!

I simply cannot express how amazing it was to be on that top table of judges, shoulder to shoulder with some of my pole Heros and such incredible talent. Every single competitor performed to their utmost maximum and I was brought to tears during 3 performances! (Which made writing the moves down even harder!) I had lactic acid build up in my thumb and forefinger and almost burnt a blister on the side of my hand from it moving across the desk as I wrote. I got dry eye staring at the stage and performers by trying not to blink during complicated tumbles and combinations. I gawped at the performers with stalkerish intensity. Doubles, Males and Females. I wrote down tricks, moves and transitions from all performances and I was tested to the limit with the unprecedented amount of talent and innovation.
I cannot wait for next year and I cannot wait to see the moves so gracefully introduced to pole on that night being emulated at the new few competitions I am judging. The event was so well managed and executed, thanks to Dollhouse and Pole Passion’s seamless integration with the polers and the non pole performers of the night. I was present at pole history and I was there with some of the most talented people in the business. Humbled and over awed? Yes, every single second.
Huge congratulations to everyone who took part, who competed and didn’t make it to the final, to the family and friends of the competitors, to the judges and most of all to everyone backstage who made it all happen. It was an incredible event, and I am so very happy to have played my part at the World Pole Sport and Fitness Championships 2011.

After his first performance where there the music failed at 1 minute 20 seconds he had the opportunity to dance and perform again – he took up that challenge dispite continuing with his performance with no music but just to the standing ovation claps and cheers of his name.
He was nervous that he wouldn’t have the energy to do it for a second time and would the music work again too?? It did, and his more relaxed performance won him second place – with the winner being Evengy Greshilov from Russia

Since the age of 16 I trained at the national conservatory of dance in Avignon France
At 18 I became a member of junior ballet BCP (Ballet de la Cites Des Papes) for 2 years
I have a Degree of modern dance.
After that I moved to Paris for dancing in The Musical show Gladiator for 1 year and after that Pal Frenak in Budapest for 3 years At the same time I was working for TV as a dancer & choreographer doing TV shows.
In 2008 as part of my training I tried Bi Kram yoga - I competed in an international competition representing France with my prize taking me to Los Angeles for the first time.

It was there I found my love for pole dance in a club. I watched in awe the pole dance performers. It was at that moment I knew this was my destiny.

When I arrived back to France I was in search of lessons which at that time there were non I met with Laurence Hilsum (currently seeded No.2 in the females World Pole Sport & Fitness 2011 category) who was my first teacher and inspiration from there she became my best friend.
I went on in search of work which lead me to the UK to gain my Pole fitness instructor accreditation and instructor training award with Vertical Dance headed by KT Coates
I went on to enter Britain’s Got Talent in 2009 demonstrating the art of pole dance piped at the post by Susan Boyle !!!

Astra Beck Aerial hoops and Silks tuition

Astra has been working with Pole Passion and in the circus entertainment industry for the last ten years as an aerialist and circus performer. Specializing in aerial hoop and silks but also skilled at static trapeze, doubles trapeze, rope and cloudswing. She is now keen to pass on her knowledge of the aerial arts to anyone who is interested in learning. She is also a qualified yoga teacher and has discovered a love of teaching during recent years through teaching pole dancing for fun, fitness and confidence.

Due to the success of the sessions Astra will be teaching another 2 hour mixed ability workshop in hoop and silks. These sessions are suitable for complete beginners wanting to try these skills out, for those who have got the aerial bug and want more and also for those old timers who just can’t get enough of it! No previous experience is necessary but I would advise any newcomers that the ability to do an unassisted pull up or an inversion is a requirement as this is an aerial class and we will be needing some basic upper body strength in order to climb and use the equipment.

Hoop and silks are classic pieces of circus aerial equipment. During the session we will learn how to use the equipment safely, a basic vocabulary of moves and positions, along with technique and conditioning exercises, as many tricks as we can fit in and for the more advanced students we will be working on short sequences of moves.

Please wear comfortable training clothing that covers the legs such as leggings, tracksuits, catsuits etc. We will be working in bare feet. Some people find it useful to bring training gloves for doing hoop as they find that their hands become sore.
Benefits: You will develop core strength, particularly in the upper body and stomach regions, flexibility, agility, confidence and a new skill!

Please note that these sessions are challenging so come fully prepared to work hard!

Jenyne, also known as Butterfly, has been a professional pole dancer for 10 years. She
first began pole dancing, which then led her to other circus aerial apparatus and it was
then she truly discovered her love for flying. The focus of her life became performance
art and she moved to Las Vegas. Jenyne acquired positions performing in the shows Le
Reve (produced by Cirque du Soleil director Dragone) and for world famous DJ’s such
as Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, and David Guetta. She teaches and performs on trapeze, hoop,
fabric, rope, hammock, straps, bungee, and she created the first female aerial pole act.
Jenyne won the first ever US Pole Dance Federation Champion and then placed 2nd in
the World. She is currently available for instructional workshops, performances, hosting
special events, and judging competitions. Jenyne recently visited places such as Australia,
Russia, Canada, England, Scotland, Italy, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, and the

Alesia started dancing at the age of four. From age 11 she trained at a circus school and took lessons of different dancing styles. She also holds B.Sc in Business Administration. She has been pole dancing since 1997. She started poling for fitness 6years ago as she wanted to get in shape after having her child.

2008 was a great year for her as she entered the glamour category for Miss Pole Dance UK Professional championship www.misspoledance-uk.com in Scala (London) and took home the winning title a defining point in her pole dance career.
In 2009 she entered to the World Pole Championship held in Jamaica and took the 3rd place. She vowed then to finish her competition career!!

In April 2010 she broke a record at the Guinness World Record Show (the longest time to hold the acrobatic pole dancing position called “the sword” is 1 minute 24.62 seconds). She also started to train on the aerial tissues (silks) and she is progressing at a steady pace. Her hobbies include various sports: swimming, weightlifting, acrobatics and acro balance.
In 2010 she entered World Pole Dance once more taking 4th place and winning best costume award.
She is always happy to try something new. This she can discover while travelling to another countries or continents. She likes visiting new places, meeting people and trying local food. This year she went to Brazil and Australia to share her teaching experience with other poledancers. She also took part at the Pole International Showcase 2011 - Pole Reflections in Sydney and shared the stage with the most famous female and male dancers such Remi Martin, Jamilla Deville, Marlo, Adam Devis. She will be involved at the new opera of Igor Stravinsky -"Rakes Progress" with her Pole Dance acts this year.

For her to win this championships is like a dream, she was genuinely shocked to hear her name announced and in her winning speech she expresses that this is the best feeling in the world and for 14 years she could only dream of this day

After school he arrived in Moscow for his education and graduated from Government College of Circus arts. Like artist of circus he performed in Great Moscow Circus (2006) and took part in a show "Shangrila-3", Japan (2007), as an aerial gymnast and a dancer. He Graduated Government University of Culture and Arts, department choreography. He worked in a dance troupe of the one Russian singer, for about 3 years. At this moment he is working as an instructor of different dance styles, such as: Hip-hop, House, Contemporary, and Pole Dance and has been practicing pole dance many years ago, but seriously started pole dancing little more than 2 years ago. In spring 2010 he knew about World Pole Sport & Fitness Championship and decided to take part then.
‘ In the process of preparation and presentation I realized that it was mine! =) In this art i can combine all that i can. I can express my perceptions of the music in dance. World Pole Sport and Fitness 2011 – Budapest Pole Dancing at its best

The first weekend of October saw the event that Pole Dance and Fitness professionals and exercise professionals and pole instructors all over the world had been waiting for - The Worlds Pole Sport and Fitness (Official World Pole Dance Championships 2011). Presented by Pole Passion – UK; Doll House – Hungary; and Loft1 Fitness - Switzerland, the Championships – dubbed “the World Cup of Pole Dance Fitness”- took place at the BVUSS Sports centre, “Budaörsi Városi Sportcsarnok, Uszoda és Strand” 2040, Budaörs, Hársfa Street 6. Hungary.

Many competitors have a career in fitness or work in a gym or are fitness training instructors or personal trainers. The competition saw 13 finalists from every corner of the globe compete in the female singles category, for a chance to hold the coveted title for the coming year. Top seed Felix Cane representing Australia (of Cirque du Soleil) was unable to attend due to her ever increasing work commitments since her phenomenal second world champion win last year in Switzerland. Rafaela Montanaro (Brazil) was also unable to participate this year due to injury, and pulled out last minute, however Marie Luz Escalante (Argentina) automatically went through to the finals – second seed, with the remaining twelve places up for grabs during the four group preliminary stages held in Hungary on 29th September (a mixture of 39 seeded and unseeded wildcard entries).

In this years event, two new categories ran for the first time ever – Male Singles and Synchronised Doubles. The inclusion of these new categories demonstrating the ever increasing popularity of pole fitness and its gradual but relentless move towards acceptance as a mainstream form of fitness.
During the competition, contestants were judged on their presentation; dance and fitness; and pole tricks. The standard was unbelievably high from all contestants, with beautifully choreographed routines, superhuman strength, death defying stunts, impossible spins and seamless transitions demonstrated by all.

In the Female category, Hanka Venselaar from Holland, who didn’t quite make it to the finals last year, progressed massively and took third place, as well as Best Pole Tricks Award, after wowing the audience and judges alike with her seamless and daring tricks. Second place went to Laurence Hilsum from France with a beautifully choreographed routine. Laurence was a finalist last year. But the final’s champion was Miss Pole Dance UK champion in 2009, and World Pole Dance finalist last year, Alesia Vazmitsel, who took home the crown for Belarus after performing a spell-binding routine with her trademark flexibility, incredible strength innovative moves and tricks and smooth combinations – telling her story through a dream performance where she expressed most of her new moves are created through her dreams. Alesia expressed the day before she felt she was taking a risk with new choreography for her – she was nervous and self-doubting, but after a sympathetic ear and words of encouragement she performed her faultless routine with immaculate precision.

In the synchronised doubles category, Ilka Bardoczy and Barbara Palmaffy took first place for the hosting country of Hungary, as well as Best Pole Tricks award. Kate Johnstone and Bendy Kate took 2nd place representing the UK; as well as Best Entertainer Award, with a highly original concept and routine, UK doubles only being together training for about one year and have had additional training in the circus arts and acro balance. Michelle Shimmy and Matty Shields travelled all the way from Australia, demonstrated amazing and equal strength and took third place

In the New Males category, Evgeny Greshilov from Russia took first place, as well as the awards for Best Pole Tricks and Best Entertainer. Keem Martinez, representing the UK, took second place after a standing ovation from the crowd. Third place went to Loic Lebret from France, whose dazzling outfit of glittering stones won him the Best Costume Award.

All contestants arrived at BVUSS from 8am for their registration and dress rehearsals from 8-11am pole practice took place then the professional hair and makeup artists were available for the whole team followed by a complete dress rehearsal
Many more sponsored joined the set up this year with Rpole being the main competition Pole Sponsor with their professional stainless steel poles now used in all three world championships There was the first time for many to have a test and feel of the revolutionary pole, now labelled the lightest and most portable and versatile pole in the world during the afternoon there were many interviews with media interest from China USA UK and Europe even the Wall Street Journal has a representative present
The main doors opened at 4pm to the lavish auditorium with the shows beginning at 5pm starting with the Japanese synchronised male and female couple

Move Syntax Coordinator World Pole Sport & Fitness 2011 Budapest

Pippa Caesar has been awarded this role this year in Budapest a very important position in the finals category for the female and male Pole championships

Move Syntax Coordinator - This position is for the WORLD FINALS ONLY in all categories
This position was successfully introduced last year and held by Deb Riley

This job will be challenging as the whole routine from start to finish is watched without a blink (almost)!!!
So being able to write down the moves as they are performed is challenging - Knowing the names of the moves is essential or being able to describe an unknown move/transition with speed – this may be a variation of a move also.
the moves are graded and marked out of 5 - 5 being the highest mark depending on technicalities of the sport

Obviously the industry has lots of different names for many of the same moves
Some moves are combinations of two moves which may be called a new name!
However as long as we use the same format and name for each contestant during the competition that is the main thing.
this position, on the judging panel, does not include judging the presentation or dance/fitness elements of the candidate’s performance just purely on the Tricks category

All other judges will judge all other categories and also the tricks category

Execution of moves (safely and effectively) must be considered when marking and listing the moves down!

The job responsibility is to look for any new moves / pole poses etc. and to label them?!! And document them – Making History

There is an award BEST TRICKS too
From the documentation collected and the rest of the judge’s scores collaboration, the winner will be chosen .
This award will be decided during the judge’s deliberation after all the competitors have competed

The documented information will also be used in the case of a ‘pole down’ whereby two same winners may have the same points - the tricks score will decide the winner.

The amount of different moves will be counted; also duplication of moves will also be noted
The one with more moves will be judged higher than that person with less moves - This will only be used during the deliberation process in the event there is a tie and not during the initial judging process in accordance to the main rules and regulations.

The written information will be collected at the end of every competition

The history, the reasons why the pole was created

In 2005 pole fitness was now borne and thriving, my fitness programmes were in development, documented and student registration was on the increase, but something was missing………………. It was a pole that could be put up with ease, that I indeed felt safe on and one where I would feel sexy on too.
Without breaking a nail in the process without breaking out in a sweat whilst trying to erect the darn thing without fighting with spanners and step ladder or falling off a metallic podium whilst clonking my heels .

It was a vision to create a pole similar to that of a step that I often used for my fitness regime – maybe even a portable gym could be created on and around the design?

We (my husband Steve Penney and I) spend many hours exploring our creative ideas with passion and determination with a view of, if people can fly to the moon we can create a free standing pole with no ceiling or ground fixtures that would balance, be safe, yet light enough to be transported by the female instructor without injuring their back or straining a muscle before their teaching, with no tools, no manly mechanics, but pure elegance, sleekness.

I have never been so excited to see the boss (the central component) in manufacturer. For the first time in my life I could see how people are passionate about metal work!!
Our UK manufactured pole was a reality after hours of prototyping. - One of our first expeditions being explored by the worlds greatest at the inaugural World Pole Dance championships in Jamaica in 2009 of Felix Cane - Australia, Pantera Blacksmith USA , Alesia Vazmitsel UK, Tammy Morris Canada, Tracey Simmonds UK, Deb Riley UK to name a few.

Never had a free standing pole - flush to the floor without a stage or podium been developed and what’s more endorsed internationally.

It was actually a mistake our pole was always going to be a 50mm diameter (most popularly used here in the UK) but on the morning of the launch the pole (or boss) maybe had swollen during the international travel to Jamaica maybe it was the humidity!! But later learnt there is a difference between a 2inch and 50mm diameter (technical manly details!! Who knows ) however we had no choice but to use the 38mm as our demo model as the 50mm did not fit!

It was immediately loved by all, finding tricks more easily to execute with the smaller, more comfortable and secure hand grip – a revolution was identified

That was nearly 2 and half years ago and with continual progressions and development 24/7 the Rpole play is now the most light weight and portable pole on the market IN THE WORLD allowing all polers to pole where ever they want, whenever they want, however they want , challenging themselves to the extreme, developing core strength to its maximum with the slight movements challenging the inner core muscles more, just like Kat from Nottingham UK did here when she decided to climb up Ben Nevis, this summer, the highest mountain in the UK, with her Rpole play securely strapped to her back all the way – she even managed to do a short demo at the top much to the humour and amazement of fellow climbers!!

Im happy to share this clip with you – Kat my new friend and new inspiration into my pole world (now in my 10th year) will be developing new innovative ideas for the pole and our government approved REP’s accredited instructor training – that is one thing I love about poling you meet amazing people, seemingly from nowhere, every week of your life.

Kat being into extreme sports is not your stereo typical pole dancer, she is in fact a university lecturer, a doctor of psychology PhD – not your normal lecturer either!!

Saturday showed Hungary’s most spectacular performers demonstrating Pole Fitness in the glamour and fitness categories at the Club Prestige in Budapest Hungary

12 contestants demonstrated the flexibility and control of athletes and gymnastic elements of the performances with spectacular costumes and pole presentations

Some candidates had only poled for 8 months but many also poling for several years.

‘When I was invited for the first time three years ago I had noticed a significant increase in the skills during the competition this year with more use of the floor, more advanced tricks and combinations and with this year’s winner Barbara Palmatty producing a beautifully choreographed performance, what was really exciting for the sport is that the chief of aerial acrobatics Association Tunde Vincze and Sandor Altorjai, the head of the gymnastic Association of Budapest was also endorsing the championships and presenting the prizes - Sandor himself an Olympic competitor in gymnastics.' commented Kay Penney - International & United Kingdom Judge and main organiser of the World Pole Dance championships.

Pole Passion has again been invited to the amazing event at Arun Leisure Centre, Bognor Regis, West Sussex, PO22 8ED on Sunday October 30th 2011. 10am start – 8pm
This event is for raising vital money for Macmillan Cancer Support and the day will consist of 1 hour per dance style for people to come and participate in. Last year Pole Passion helped raise a massive £15,273.78

The Event Day

There will be over 400 people there joining in and the styles will be from sexy salsa to funky jazz, to Burlesque dance from our very own Burlesque Passion and this year new will be Can Can presentations.
All the dance classes will be kept fun and simple so everyone can follow them, whether they are a strictly come dancer professional, to those participants having 2 left feet!

Arun Leisure Centre has kindly donated their venue for this charitable event.

"I'm Hanka Venselaar , 28 years old, from Nijmegen, representing the Netherlands.

In my daily life I'm a PhD student in bioinformatics and I'm trying to solve biological problems by using 3D-protein structures. I was a competitive gymnast but retired 4 years ago. I was desperately trying to find a new sport that is as challenging as gymnastics, and then I found pole dancing. I loved it from the start!

It requires the same amount of flexibility and strength as gymnastics but demands also a certain amount of show, something that I definitely missed in gymnastics. I try to turn every performance into a complete act with acrobatic skills, original combinations, but also with dance and clothes that fit the music. When I started pole dancing I did not think of competitions, but things change over time and I became the Dutch National Champion in 2008 and the Benelux Champion in 2009 and 2010.

Competing in the worlds feels like the next (big) step."

Her first competition was "Miss Pole Fetish Utah in 2009." Where she was placed 1st in the advanced division. Shortly after, she was one of the 12 girls chosen to compete in USPDF West Coast Regional in the 2009 Competition, where she received her "Pro Status."
Other competitions Zoraya has competed in are Vertical Pole Challenge, where she secured herself a spot in the Finale, and USPDF National Championship 2010 in the Pro Division.

She have performed with Jenyne Butterfly, who has been a big inspiration and coach to her as has Felix Cane who she has also performed with. Felix Cane and Zoraya completed teaching duo workshops and privates in Southern California in 2010.

Zoraya’s goal is to continue to show people the fitness side of pole. She absolutely loves everything to do with pole, but for her it is the strength, control and flexibility that she finds so beautiful and intriguing.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 states:

Section 3 of the act - places general duties upon employers and the self-employed to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of anyone not in their employment who are likely to be affected by their undertaking.
So if you are a teacher, instructor, or responsible for gym or fitness equipment then you will need to ensure you keep the equipment free from harmful gym germs.
For cleaning many of these gym germs we would recommend to keep all equipment and pole areas fully maintained and cleaned regularly. We would recommend an anti bacterial and anti fungi solution. Pole Fitness Poles must be cleaned regularly.
The fitness/dance poles are likely to harbour many gym germs. A mild disinfectant wipe which is impregnated with a high specification broad spectrum bactericide is recommended. Used in both the health care and food industry, they are active against bacteria as well as viruses and fungi. These are ideal for use to clean your fitness/dance pole. Antibacterial wipes are safe and easy to use before and after pole class. Especially useful to help control the spread of bacteria and fungi on fitness/dance poles and other equipment used in gyms, clubs, leisure centers and the home.

Please note that some manufacturers of poles do not recommend you use chemicals to clean the pole, as this may corrode the surface of the pole – always check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Creating the pole fitness Code of Pole Practice in 2006 was about setting professional standards and professional ethics. Creating a sound and ethical basis to demonstrate our athletic art without the fear of being wrongly judged.

My name is Kay Penney and I begun the foundations of Pole Passion (UK) back in the year 2000 soon after the birth of my third child, lost in the hum drum of my busy motherhood I had lost who I was. As a qualified health and beauty expert and therapist and qualified fitness professional and being within the fitness industry now for nearly 20 years I soon became committed to solely practice and innovate the art of pole here in the UK (I had got the bug from the very first time I touched the pole) With no where to learn other than gentleman clubs, at that time, my quest was to remove and expose the art of pole for all to see, without the fear of being wrongly judged. Due to the rapid expansion of my teachings, my business partner and I decided to take the company Limited in 2005.

In 2006 I was devastatingly diagnosed with cancer and immersed myself further in my own well-being and decided to take the techniques of pole, directly and indirectly helping us all through a very difficult and challenging time. Since that life changing experience I deciding to document everything (mainly through fear of not being a live to see my dream and reality coming true:- the dream of creating techniques that would be available to all without having to train behind closed doors as I did in the beginning for the fear of being wrongly judged – judged as a prostitute or easy person!! Giving sex to anyone who thought that’s what I was portraying.

From our teachings, we created pole parties, from pole parties we innovated pole fitness lessons, from pole fitness lessons we pioneered two accredited pole instructor training packages to coincide with our existing programmes– recognised as the highest awards within the UK fitness industry written in conjunction with the exercise to music qualifications (launched in July 2008). Attracting fitness and dance enthusiast across the world, so far from many parts of Europe, Brazil, Hungry, Portugal, America and all across the UK and Ireland and still continue to do this on a monthly basis.
We are also proud to own and operate, with our supporters, the most successful and largest pole competition within the UK, Miss Pole Dance UK (professional) now in its 7 successive year and believe these competitions have been very instrumental in educating the general public to change their perception of Pole technique and offering professional recognition for the athletes invloved. Innovating and introducing the pole synchronised doubles category in 2007. Owning and operating since 2007 Miss Pole Dance amateur competition too, for those individuals new to pole technique who predominately train in gym environments. Following on in 2009 introducing Mr Pole Fitness UK allowing for the first time a place for men to show their power around the pole too in a safe and non-judgemental and supportive environment.

Owing and operating World Pole Sport & Fitness competition was also a massive milestone for the history of the sport - introducing a networking opportunity and week long event to all countries to share and develop predominately pole techniques with each other, culminating in a competition, show case style to wow audiences from around the world, in an exotic exiting and suppportive environment. The venue, not being our preferred first choice as it still had links with sexual connotations of supporting Playboy and swingers holidays we focused more on the fact the resort also offered golfing weeks and tennis tournaments! So oftern forgotten about when mentioned the word Hedonism Jamaica!!, however as our first year we decided to take advantage of the resorts kind offer to support our ideas, again being supported with open minded risk taking people it worked. Our similarities that we both are about pushing the boundaries and innovating something new fun and exciting without the fear of being wrongly judged! We reiterate that our focuses are on professionalism, maintaining ethical and healthy standards which we have built up for many years, supported by strict rules and regulations and the supportive fitness environment they had on resort, and their element of fun supported our ethos too.

We currently support international Master Trainers and have created Master Class training here within the UK beginning with Pole Ikon Pantera from the USA, where upon our initial meeting with Pantera back in 2005 at the World finals in Amsterdam where I was an invited international judge. Pantera has now not only become an icon here within the UK but we are pleased to announce our personal friendship has reached a new level – I so wish she would stop calling me mum though!! (big sister please)
We have also revolutionised the pole fitness industry by innovated the first portable free standing pole with no ceiling fixtures exclusively designed for the gym (and home) environment, without a stage or platform and integrating a mat flooring, which we believe will unlock the teaching in gym environments, which subsequently and in time has become available for all ages.

we understand that networking and continual professional development is important, especially in a growing innovative sport and community and currently we support and promote this within our company structure and set up. I am currently studying A1 standard for assessment planning, judgement of evidence and candidate feedback for the National Vocational Qualification assessment process specific to pole techniques.

I’m using the information to continue to create more processional standards which will in turn help create more credibility for the pole community as a whole, creating further opportunities and avenues to share my knowledge.

With his back ground of Capoeira and acrobatics, Carlos takes to the world stage representing Germany

‘My first contact with the public was 9 years old with ballet presentations. I started learning capoeira when I was 15 years old, after learning the break dance which I have been practicing since 8 years old. I had my first professional opportunity in a great artistic project (Circus Roda) the best and most well structured circus in Brazil.

In this project I learned numbers of acrobatics, aerial cradle, aerial straps, trapeze, and cube manipulation.
In this period I met my trainer Angel Andricain one of the best coaches of Brazil, he is from Cuba and it was he who introduced me and taught me basic techniques of Chinese pole. During this time I went through many experiences.

Synchronised Doubles in the World Pole Sport & Fitness Championships 2011 for the first time

Reasons for the different diameter sizes of poles in the World Pole Sport & Fitness Championships

As an organisation we have to work with the logistics of the stage and organising many separate competitions on the same afternoon without time to change the poles.

The singles category in the championships is carried out on 1 x 38mm spinning Rpole and 1 x 50mm static Rpole to show versatility and multiple skill and techniques of both a static pole and spinning pole and not favouring one country over another who may just work off spinning poles or static poles. The diameter size of the poles is at both spectrums to create a more fair approach.

For the synchronicity element of the doubles category we have to choose either both static or both spinning - As the doubles category is new this year we have chosen 2 x static poles which is what the majority of most countries use at this time.

We apologise to those countries who are only working off only spinning poles and appreciate that by choosing both static poles for the doubles category, this does limit moves and combinations which you may very well be used to if you are using only a spinning pole.
We can state however most combinations used on a spinning pole can be adapted to a static pole

To be a world champion it is important that you have the versatility to be able to perform off any pole – both static and spinning poles, however we fully understand this may not accommodate everyone’s style and preference at this time.

In the world championships we are now working with over 30 countries and each country has a different type of pole they train from, some have 38mm some have 45mm and some have 50mm
To be fair we must incorporate more than one diameter size pole in the championships as this accommodates those pole tricks and moves carried out by a pair who is executing their performance move from one pole and by having two different sizes accommodates more countries.

Pole ‘dancing’ for 7 year olds: Is it right or wrong? Pole Passion comments

Pole dancing or ' Pole fitness' as it is alternatively more commonly known by thousands of followers, has come under the spot light again, recently in the worldwide media, with children as young as 7 years old taking up the sport and having their achievements posted onto Facebook.
All children's photos should be protected, with their parents or guardians giving their consent to publically displaying their photos It is the instructors responsibility to gain this written agreement and we are proud to inform all our trainee instructors of these legal and ethical obligations to minors.

Many people have criticised the act of posting children on social networks and websites and feel this is inappropriate, which if portrayed wrongly we totally agree with. However pole fitness has come so far away from its original UK roots in the strips clubs and has become a fun, effective and harmless form of challenging and progressive exercise regimes, using the vertical pole as the fitness equipment tool.

Many argue that the lessons are encouraging young girls to enter in to a world of sexuality and objectification. These stigmas are becoming an outdated stigma as more and more successful dance and fitness schools are beginning and opening across the world teaching pole dance and fitness techniques Many people feel and believe that because pole dancing, lap & striptease originated in strip clubs and gentleman’s clubs, they feel it is inappropriate to teach to children but ‘pole dancing & fitness techniques’ has evolved dramatically since it’s accreditation status in 2008 as an approved and accredited form of exercise .

Some may still be shocked that business women do it, mothers do it, policewomen and event lawyers and doctors are doing it!! Men are also emerging as pole fitness enthusiasts, impressed by their female partners growing strength and renewed confidence. So naturally the children of those responsible adults are going to want to do it too - after all it is so much FUN !!

Currently many pole fitness lessons take place in specially designed studios for exercise professionalism and safety as well as in gym settings (thanks to the development of the free standing RPole which can be put anywhere with ease allowing gyms to hold lessons in their dance studios amongst other more conventional sports and exercise classes such as Bums n Tums, Step aerobics and Boxercise

You can also now gain professional accreditation in the sport by becoming a qualified instructor, recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals. Supported by Government approved Skills Active, Created by the leading UK pole fitness training provider Pole Passion

Another argument against children doing pole fitness is ‘how it looks online’.
Photos and videos should not be taken by anyone without the prior consent of the parent or guardian - The same as with any sport conducted at a school sports day event for example, this means that if photos or video did appear online then it is most likely to be a direct result of the parent uploading it (as many do when their child takes part in a dance performance, football game or martial arts grading).

So the question should really be, ‘Is Pole Fitness good exercise for children? ‘
So what is the difference between pole dance and pole fitness?
Pole fitness wording seems to be more acceptable than the words Pole Dancing, however despite the obvious wording differences where pole fitness maybe more socially accepted due to the preconceived miss conceptions of those to the words of pole dancing - the latter is choreographed rhythmic movements set to music, whereas pole fitness may incorporate choreography combining routines, with its focus also on power strength & conditioning, incorporating tricks and spins & and gymnastic style combinations, challenging the whole body - usually with music used as a background as opposed to the rhythm of the dance !

The content taught in pole fitness is suitable for any age, obviously children have shorter concentration spans and this must be taken into consideration when structuring sessions, working with each participants capabilities and flexibility focusing specifically on body posture and correct body alignment whilst working on progressive stretches and flexibility to maintain and encourage a healthy well-being and body, mentally and of course physically but like any form of exercise aimed at children, there are many guidelines that should be adhered too.

Pole Passion created a Code of Pole Practice in 2008 to support the Newly developing Pole Industry to support and represent and guide instructors and students, Recommendations include professional standards, ethics, personal responsibilities, and rights, dignity and worth of every student and instructor.

Trained & qualified experienced instructors should be at the forefront of children's lessons. If a dance school naturally wishes to broaden its repertoire of dance styles
Instructors should be CRB CRIMINAL RECORDS BUREAU checked and registered with their local authority (as with anyone working with young children),
Parents must sign their health & safety exercise disclaimer
Instructors should be first aid qualified supporting their participants in the unlikely but possibility of any accidents
Fully insured to teach children as their young bodies require a different set of warm-ups and movements to that of a fully matured body

Most importantly they must have the mindset and aptitude with the greatest of patience to reach and progressively support minors.

Pole fitness is designed to be form of exercise akin to gymnastics (similar to the bar work commonly seen in the Olympics but on a vertical angle rather than the horizontal) With the grace one might find in a classically trained dancer (just as in ballet as the current World Sport & Fitness Champion is British born, Felix Cane, age 27, who found her way into the sport recommended by her mother, is actually a classically trained ballet dancer finding the pole art her main area of expertise now).

Many young girls are sent to ballet classes whilst others may be sent to gymnastic lessons. So what is the problem with combining the two in to a fun, effective and NEW healthy form of exercise?

Chinese pole which dates back hundreds of years, is taught to children as young as 5 or 6 and the principle of the exercise is the same, apart from the design of the thicker poles- so could this mean the social culture of our non supporters? Chinese poles are held up slightly differently to that of the majority of the poles used for pole fitness and they also have a coating of a tacky substances which enables additional grip, allowing moves to be executed in jeans and jumpers rather than the fitness poles made of metal which require some of the more advanced moves to be completed in shorts and t-shirts. The skin is required to support the body on the pole safely and therefore being one of the main reasons why many participants wear crop tops and short shorts.

At national and international levels the competitors are also judged on their costumes too making it a fabulous spectators sport - many competitors in fact wear more than say a competitor in a volley ball team!!

Currently Pole Passion, one of the UK’s leading pole fitness training provider (offering officially the highest REP’s accreditation in the world ) have been following the policy of teaching 16's and over since pole fitness was created here in the UK in 2001. This age specification was lowered in 2008 from age 18 requested by the gyms that were currently supporting and teaching Pole Fitness sessions, in line with the age policy for other gym equipment and age restrictions.

No plans have been made to lower it any further at present. Kay Penney founder of Miss Pole Dance UK National Championship in 2005, World Pole Dance in 2009 & Pole Passion Ltd In 2001 commented, 'As a mother of 3 young children I have always been mindful of societies confused and sometimes incorrect pre-conceived notions of pole dance and fitness, which can be blurred by lack of published information. The reason why the very first National UK championships was set up was foremost to educate the public; men and ladies about the pure power, strength and determination these athletes require to do what they do - Gone have the days of just slinking around poles in people's front rooms and gentleman’s clubs only for the titillation of others. Pole Dancing & Fitness has evolved and techniques modified and changed so it can be accepted and taught professionally in gym establishments to that of all ages & is totally different than ' Lap dancing & stripping techniques ' that still many get confused by today’.

In an average pole fit class, with a qualified & specialist fitness professional and instructor, will include a warm up section, which is required usually off the pole equipment, and in many classes these represents a warm up & cool down section similar to any aerobics class, warming the muscles and joints in preparation of safe exercise. The class incorporates stretching, conditioning, toning and exhilarating fun like no other exercise class can provide, with an amazing fun and social element to it too.

So the conclusion being, yes pole fitness is positive for those individuals who choose this unique, challenging and new form of exercise and dance. As with all other forms of exercise and sport the parents will be required to consent their siblings chosen sport and have an obligation to portray this sport professionally, ethically and sensibly too.
Parents should be looking for the correct qualified instructors with qualifications as listed above and of course a positive mental attitude to train hard and sensibly to perhaps one day support their students to represent their country in their chosen sport of pole fitness too.

Jess started to Pole Dance at the very early age of 15, encouraged by her Grand Dad!! Aged 60.

Britain’s biggest dance show, Sky One's GOT TO DANCE, is back for a third series. Davina McCall will host the competition, with Ashley Banjo, Kimberley Wyatt and Adam Garcia all returning as Judges, as dancers battle it out to win the life-changing sum of a quarter of a million pounds and the chance to become the GOT TO DANCE CHAMPION 2012.

Applications are now being accepted and they are particularily wanting anyone who thinks they have what it takes to come to their auditions - whether they're 4 or 84, into Street or Salsa, a soloist or in a group, a professional or an amateur. Pole Fitness Instructors Pass First Aid Certification

Congratulations go to the 12 Pole Fitness and Dance Instructors for passing their Basic First Aid, Health & Safety Pole Sport compliant Course.

The comprehensive course headed by Lorrie, who had amazing stories from her 20 years as an active London Paramedic headed the group to success. Lorrie admitted she had never had pole instructors before however her client base includes Kick boxers, footballers and children!

Pole Passion who has inniciated the course since 2009, to provide the pole sport industry continual professional development to support the learner throughout.

The main benefit of the course had to be a sound understanding of safety for the student and insturctor in the unlkely event an incident ever happens - confidence and knowledge is key

First Aid Pole Sport Specific from Pole Passion

Basic First Aid and Pole Dance Fitness

Whilst serious injuries are extremely rare during pole fitness exercise we have listed some of the more common ailments during a pole fitness lesson which you may come across and the best way of how to deal with them. Remember always have a mat and a spotter when inverting

Pole Passion now has a specific Instructor training course - Level 3 - specifically focusing on the additional safety elements of spotting during inversions, on the free standing portable R poles.

Bruising
Potential Causes:
• Incorrect technique
• Compensating for lack of strength with friction grip
• Medication taken by participant

Advice:
• Rest area until bruise no longer sore
• Apply arnica cream to the area
• Apply ice to large bruises immediately after injury has occurred

Sprains and Strains
Potential Causes:
• Over training
• Incorrect Techniques
• Trips, falls, tumbles

Advice:
• Stop using the injured area immediately
• Rest the area
• Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about anti-inflammatory creams or tablets which could aid recovery

Blisters
Potential Causes:
• Excessive or Condensed Training (i.e, master classes) can lead to blistered hands and wrists
• Ill –fitting shoes or trainers can lead to blistered feet

Advice:
• Reduce or stop training and rest before the blisters burst which may cause a secondary infection
• Use gloves to protect the hands while training intensely
• Ensure the area is clean and apply a blister plaster if possible

Muscle Spasms and Cramps
Potential Causes:
• Dehydration
• Lack of potassium or electrolytes
• Lack of other dietary nutrients
• Illness or fever

Advice:
• Avoid training on a cramping muscle
• Stretch and rest the area
• Ensure a balanced diet with adequate nutrients is eaten
• Regularly sip water while exercising

Concussion
Possible Causes:
• Fall, trip or tumble
• Trauma to the head caused by moving items (e.g. kicked by another participant)
• Dropped by another participant (e.g. from a doubles move)

Advice:
• Don’t fall off! Heed instructor safety information
• Assess whether patient is conscious and ensure they remain conscious
• Call 999 Immediately

Fractures and breakages of the bones
Potential Causes:
• Incorrect techniques
• Unnecessary force
• Trips, falls and tumbles

Advice:
• Call 999
• Immobilise the affected area
• In the case of a protruding fracture, ensure that a first aider is able to secure the affected area
• In the case of a sucking chest wound, cover the area immediately with a sterile pad and ensure it is held there

What is your Style of Pole?
The Different interpretations of pole techniques and its History

Pole Dancing or Pole Fitness as it is also known as in modern times and its performance techniques have come a long way since the 1980’s in Canada where it originally started and was documented.
Still today many people fear pole dancing techniques as some way of alluring gentleman and by stripping their clothes off into a gentleman’s wallet!! Some still confuse pole dancing and pole fitness with stripping, in fact in many modern UK pole schools and across the world, the new age polers are far from that image and certainly do not have the same mindset of those dancers of the early era.

The complexity of pole technique now described as an ‘art form’, can be interpreted in many ways.

Over the most recent years since 2006 when pole fitness was first documented and the introductions of qualifications such as REP’s (Register of Exercise Professionals), Accredited and certified pole instructor courses by Pole Passion, one of the UK’s, most respected and leading training providers all in a quest to educated and document unified, safe and effective movements and techniques around the vertical bar. Many new styles have been created and as you read through this article you may recognise some of the styles incorporated into your style of preference.

This style is the most well known by the general public and of course this style originated from strip clubs. For many this was a taboo subject and today is very profound in many students minds as they first embark on pole techniques, with many students still not being able to tell work colleagues, family and friends of their new style of dance and exercise of their fear of being wrongly judged.
For many this style is very empowering for a woman or man to do as it boosts self confidence not to mention help with developing elegance too, which many feel the benefits transpire into every day life.
With this style, women tend to wear high platform shoes to lengthen their legs and will remove some costume too, as part of their presentations and to perhaps as a way to allure their audience.
In this day and age in a pole performance the dancer will on occasion remove some clothing, but still covering the vital parts.
This style is not to be underestimated and it takes a lot of skill to make the trickiest of spins and poses to look sexy, fluid and seamless.

The Current World Pole Dance Champion Felix Cane, although she is originally classically trained she is very well known for being a glamorous pole dancer with high heels, sexy fluid moves but with technical creativity and perfection and grace too.

Pole Fitness
This style of Pole is becoming very well known all over the world with the explosion of Pole schools being massive since 2005 when it was introduced in the UK as a form of fitness. Pole Passion conducted an independent analysis in 2006 and was told by a top fitness consultant that it would never be accepted in the UK main stream gyms but despite being told that with the ethical and unprejudiced beliefs, Pole Passion proved the statement as being wrong. Pole is being taught professionally in many gyms not only in the UK but across the world.

Pantera Blacksmith is a fine example for this category as she is very physically strong and into her fitness with pole being her prop, but she will also sometimes where heels and do a more sexy glamorous routine.

Pole Dance (Trained Dancers)

This style has a lot of different styles mixed into it, as Pole Dancing is growing the level of interest of trained dancer’s from around the world is growing too.
Pole Dancing is great for dancers as they can bring their own style to it, whether it is ballet, jazz, zumba, Irish, salsa, hip hop or maybe tap, who knows – the styles are endless and this is the versatility the pole can bring.

As most dancer’s are disciplined in to having good lines, flexibility and pick up choreography more quickly, they will be focusing more on building the muscle strength and memory for pole and therefore can advance at a quicker pace.

The 2005 Miss Pole Dance UK Champion Elena Gibson uses her highly skilled ballet training to combine with her pole dancing as she incorporates her point work skill too.

Pole Gymnastics/ Chinese Pole

This style of Pole technique is very similar to Pole Fitness as however it is mainly based on tricks and holds on and around the pole.
Students learning pole techniques that come from a gymnastics background tend to pick it up very quickly also as they have very good muscle memory and they are not as phased about swinging upside down either!
They maybe more adventurous too and not s phased as trying more daring moves such as drops and even flips.
If the women or men have trained in circus as well they may well have trained in Chinese pole.
In Chinese Pole it is very different to Pole Dancing, as the texture of the pole is rubber, all skin must be covered as other wise it can cause nasty skin burns, where as in pole dancing you need as much skin in contact on the pole which will enable a good grip the stainless steel (R-polefitness.com) creates a good gripping property or powder coated metal poles, creating a very good gripping property.
Tricks on the Chinese Pole consist of a lot drops, holds and jumpy moves also combining fluid movements that you would also see on a pole dance pole.
Some of these skills from Chinese Pole, students may wish to bring to Pole Dancing too.

Male Pole Dance

Over the last couple of years male pole dancing is becoming bigger and stronger.
With the expansion of pole dancing for women the men are not as fearful to give it a go also.
Again this has lots of different styles with in it, you may get a dance trained male combining his classical training, a strong weight training male looking for a new challenge or even a guy who has been trained by his pole dancing girlfriend for a bit of fun!
Like women some males get into to help keep themselves in shape and as it is such a physical workout most people find pole a better workout than the gym and far more fun challenging and exciting.

Pole dancing with Props and gimmicks

This style of Pole Dance is for people who love to have a certain theme to their dance and creating it into an act.
They may use big costumes, props such as chairs, hats or even lights, as this helps them tell their story.
Sometimes it may be a case of the pole is not actually the main focus on the stage but a side part to it, which they use to link everything together.
The Australian Champion Miss Suzie Q is well renowned for her gimmicks and costumes not to mention her amazing skill on the pole too.

Pole athletes, like any other sports person may misuse drugs and relaxants to help cope with stress, or perhaps to boost their own confidence whilst competing in front of a large audience especially at National or International level.

Pole Passion have now organised over 27 National and International (including 3 World Championships) to date and we have always found the candidates over the years to have proven to be extremely professional from all cultures.

In 2005 Miss Pole Dance UK lead and innovated the way in competitive pole sport and athleticism. The competition was created and planned with the professional vision to educate and promote these talented athletes, dancers and fitness experts, that were being attracted to the artistic movements around the vertical bar ‘the pole’. We believe the success of the competitions has been partly due to the professionalism created and withheld from day one, using expertise from many athletes from around the world from other fields of sporting excellence.

So far, the use of drug testing prior to any of our championships has never been necessary, however it would be perhaps foolish of us to think that it would never happen, especially as the popularity of the championships and prestige of winning is forever in high demand and the competitors gaining considerable skills and strength from year to year with the added pressure this brings to the competitors. Relaxants and stimulants such as caffeine based drinks and coffee are not so much monitored, although alcohol is, and the rulings of no alcohol for 12 hours before the championships is monitored as much as is possible. So in conclusion and mindful of the Olympic vision, random drugs testing may, and perhaps should be introduced in the future.

Pole Dancers Set to Enter the Olympics 2011

Pole Dancers are training hard and set to enter the Olympics……………… as Volley Ball Players. Headed by the current Miss Pole Dance champion and fitness expert Maxine Betts will be training the strong team to play fairly.

OK so its not the real Olympics yet however the similarities are quite scary!! 12 pole dancers will be dressing rather sexily, however this time not for the poles but for the sandy dunes of Brighton Beach playing Volleyball Already many of them practicing their bombas So will the pole dancers be able to pull off this game? Of course, with similarities to that of pole dancing – explosive moves and quick reactions needed. Good spatial and body awareness, a good overall conditioning and endurance is needed to continue to jump and move through the game, dance and perform to the song!. A strong base of legs and hips good shoulder strength, good core muscles for balance and strength, a strong back protecting from twisting and hyper extensions – hummm sounds like pole dancing to me. Did you know the Health and Safety at Work Act, places a legal obligation for you to be professionally qualified to teach Pole Fitness and is NOW a recognised sport and as such must be taught by professionally trained instructors. Gone are the days of learning from the internet and self taught untrained 'teachers'.
